BYELANES - EYE BROW DORMA - SALCOMBE DEVON

The new roof design consisted of two eyebrow dormers on front and rear elevations, 40˚ pitch slopes on each end of the building, consisting of three lead hips joining all elevations together.

Albemarle villas | Plymouth

Albemarle villas is a 160 year old grade 2 listed building in Plymouth. The original roof had a mixture of natural slates covered with a bitumen based paint which is known as a ‘turnerised’ roof. None of the original slates can be saved after this has been applied so we replaced them with 500x250mm Spanish Armada prime slates. Fixed using copper nails on top of new treated battens and a breather membrane. The hips and ridges were fitted with new code 5 lead fixed down with stainless steal straps. A 17 meter section of timber frame box gutter had originally been lined with copper, this had to be removed and a new 17 metre section of copper was fitted to this area.

LOWER TREBARRET HOUSE LOSTWITHIEL - CORNWALL

Lower Trebarret House is made up of two buildings, the oldest having a Delabole rag roof, which dates back to 1640. The other roof had 20” by 10” Delabole slates, which was built 150 years late.b Both roofs were suffering from slipped slates, due to nail fatigue and no felt/membrane. Upon removal of the rag slates it became evident that the 2” by 2” rafters and the 3” by 3” purlins were no longer fit for purpose, due to rot and beetle infestation.

LATEST PROJECTS 2023\24

Harlyn Bay North Cornwall

We completed these two roofs for Fred Champion Ground works & construction at Harlyn bay north cornwall in the summer of 2023. Both roofs had a massive roof area of 250m2 and were fitted using reclaimed delabole slates using stainless slate hooks and copper nails. We installed an intergrated solar Pv system to one of the roofs and both roofs were fitted with a ridge line sky light which transformed the interior of the property’s.

Family Home In Plymouth

This was a roofing project which as well as using my fantastic work crew, I also had my whole family involved. This is the family home in Plymouth which needed several things doing. As well as fitting a complete new roof which consisted of new 500×250 mm Spanish (Armada) slates using slate hooks and copper nails, we needed to fit two new new flue liners down the chimney It soon became evident that the chimney being around 140 years old was falling apart and needed to be taken down to roof level and rebuilt. We also decided to fit an integrated solar Pv system to the front elevation, fit x2 Velux windows and also a sun tunnel to the rear roof elevation to let in much needed natural light to the upstairs landing and hallway. As you can see from one of the photos I actually had my whole family on the roof with me at one stage

Landrake in Cornwall

We completed this roof in the winter of 2022. The property near Landrake in Cornwall has a large roof and had been sprayed previously with the dreaded ‘spray foam insulation’ which to be honest is a total disaster. After the painstaking task of removing all the spray foam from the roof timbers it was evident that there had been severe rot caused mainly from trapped condensation which was caused by the spray foam which constricts are flow in the roof space. All the timber rafters had to be removed and replaced with new along with new timber wall plates. We used dark grey 500x250mm Spanish slates with slate hooks. We also fitted new code 5 lead work to the hips on the bay roof on the rear roof elevation.

New Roof Restoration | Delabole slate | Crafthole Cornwall

We needed an entire re-roof on our very old cottage. It had previously been done in Delabole slate, which we loved and wanted to re-use if possible. A previous company had told us that it would be almost impossible to save the tiles because of the way they were fixed.

We contacted Pete on the recommendation of a neighbour whose roof work we had admired. He turned up exactly when he said he would (rare these days!), and spent good time looking at the roof and discussing the options with us, one of which was to re-use our slates. To reassure us that they could definitely do so, he came back a few days later and tested slates on every face of the roof (there are several), which was great and gave us real confidence.

He gave us two quotes based on different materials, both of which were very reasonable and clear, and he uses premium materials. When it came to doing the work, he gave us an approximate date in advance and stuck to it. Our slates were in fact very well fixed in many areas and so extremely time-consuming and challenging to remove. It would have been by far the easier option to work faster and damage more tiles, but what really impressed us is that Pete and his team painstakingly removed each one with care, and managed to save the vast majority of them - more even than we had budgeted for in the quote.

The 'new' reclaimed slates he added in were mixed seamlessly with the original ones. In addition, our roof has numerous faces, and all of them are crooked and wonky, which was a challenge generally and more specifically for adding Velux windows where we wanted them. Pete's attention to detail and genuine care about his work means that the final product is a masterpiece. I was worried that we might lose some of the character with a 'perfect' roof, but the job has been so sensitively done that it looks smart but simultaneously just as it should, and we are delighted.

The team are very easy to have around - polite, professional, tidy and just plain nice! Pete takes the time to keep you informed as the work progresses, and to discuss options - we were able to save money in some areas by doing some things slightly differently, and so the final price was in fact a bit lower than the quote - even though the team had taken all that extra time to remove the slates. Pete is what I would call 'old school' - no spivvy sales talk, no blag, no rip-off.

He's a lovely bloke and a skilled and experienced craftsman who enjoys his work and cares as much about the finished product as you do. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend him.
